Thinking is Injurious to Mental Health

I had this picture on the desk for a while. It was drawn to look like a cigarette, with the orange filter and a little smoke at the end, and a warning in letters that seemed to drip: THINKING IS INJURIOUS TO MENTAL HEALTH.

I kept returning to it, not because thought is the enemy. There is a kind of thinking that simply runs the day, and we would be lost without it. The rest of what the mind does is another matter. I wrote this years ago, and I still mean all of it:

Most thinking is useless. The only kind that’s necessary is the kind where we’re using thought to run the practicalities of life. More than 95% of thought is where we seek to change what already is or desire and scheme for what appears to be missing in our lives. Such thoughts aren’t necessary. Only action may be necessary, not actively thinking about what we might or might not do. Just be.

“Thinking is only a small aspect of consciousness. Thought cannot exist without consciousness, but consciousness does not need thought.” – Eckhart Tolle

The warning on that pack is the smoke you cannot put down, the loop that argues with this moment, invents a future to repair it, and then argues with that too. Our minds can only be still when we are not seeking or resisting anything. That point of stillness is meditation, which is simple to understand and not so easy to practice. Zero resistance plus zero desire is the whole formula.

Think not, just be.

Be, Here, Now…

The Ultimate Meditation…

Where, is what happening, now, and to whom?www.NamasteNow.com

here, now

Just sit. Quietly. Breathe gently. Eyes can be open or closed.
Where are you? Find yourself, here.
What’s happening? Inside you, and out there. Utilize your entire body and its senses to find out, first-hand.
When are you? Find yourself, now.
To whom is all this happening? Become aware of that which is aware.
    Just sit.

How To Understand Reality…

Reality is never and nowhere more accessible than in the immediate moment of one’s own life.Franz Kafka

reality

Reality is what’s happening when we pay attention to it. Are we here, in the now?

How To Soar!

Even when the air currents are ascending, no bird can soar except by outstretched wings.  – The Urantia Papers

who are we?

This quote is inspiring on two fronts!

1) That there is a Universal (or Life) current which we can attach ourselves to, which will take us to wherever we need to go.

2) And that we must make the minimum effort required to participate in that Universal program!

To connect with this Life source meditation helps tremendously. Meditation Tip #2: Sit down (at least thrice a day or when you need to feel the calm), close your eyes and take 3 deep breaths. The breaths should be long drawn, held for a few seconds and then exhaled slowly. This relaxes the body and starts to relax the mind. Breathe naturally now. Put your full attention on your breath. Watch and experience the breath as it goes in/out. You might lose track and get lost in a thought. Notice this too. And then put your attention back on the breath. Practice for 5 minutes!

affirmations

I AM ready to soar! I listen and respond, I stay humble and I serve. Life takes me where necessary. I have no worries. I just sail along…
