Questions to ask…

It is better to know some of the questions rather than to know all the answers.James Thurber

This is another bit of amazing advice! When we’re lost does it not help to ask rather than to assume and act as though we know? Men appear to do the latter more than women when lost driving apparently :)!

Well it’s the same way in life. To seek and find answers to life’s most difficult and mysterious questions; we must ask. If we go about thinking we already know, that would be true, except limited to what we already know!

Think in questions! Refine these questions. Journal all questions.

We grow when we do that.

Another quote:

"He that knows not,
and knows not that he knows not
        is a fool.
            Shun him

He that knows not,
and knows  that he knows not
        is a pupil.
            Teach him.

He that knows,
and knows not that he knows
        is asleep
            Wake him.

He that knows,
    and knows that he knows
        is a teacher.
            Follow him."

The creative act…

The creative act, the defeat of habit by originality overcomes everything.George Lois

What is creativity? Creativity comes from an original thought and takes the shape of seeing Beauty in a new way, expressing Truth as no one else has and experiencing Goodness in unique ways.

How can one be creative? By not being a slave to habit; especially not a slave to habitual thinking.

What’s the way out? See things and people as they are, don’t paint it/them by brushes of thought you’ve always thought about it/them. See it new, see them afresh. Don’t let your habitual thoughts define the rest of your life, be creative instead!

They are not the thing itself…

For they are not the thing itself; they are only the scent of a flower we have not found, the echo of a tune we have not heard, news from a country we have never yet visited.C.S. Lewis

Many of our desires are good. They’re good because they uncover in us the longing that leads to the very source of all such desires. The desire itself might be for a material object, say a digital camera. The question to ask though is, what’s it about a camera that really intrigues us? Is it a desire to know others in a deep way? Is it the need to appreciate beauty around us? Or is it to catalog precious memories that make life worthwhile? What’s even deeper than that?

By asking such questions we can understand better what will satisfy us deep inside. It won’t be the camera (‘they are not the thing itself’) it’ll be what the camera evokes inside us, it’ll also be the experiences that the camera enables in our lives and it’ll be the meaning that we discover.

What joy are you seeking in life? Is it the intermediate form or is it that which is deeper and truer?

Seeing with new eyes!

The real voyage of discovery consists not in seeking new landscapes but in having new eyes.Marcel Proust

Most of us have this constant urge to do something else, to be something else and be somewhere else. Which is all good because there’s a reason this urge exists. What is that reason for you?

There’s another way we can channel this urge, this desire for adventure, and that is by having new eyes.

New eyes to see things differently, new eyes to hear/judge and interact with others in a fresh way. New eyes that will turn our current assumptions, goals, opinions and judgments 180 degrees, or may be only 90 degrees!

One way to see differently is by staying more present and in the Now. Our thoughts and past opinions don’t then cloud our ongoing experience.

Want roses? Plant rose trees!

It will never rain roses: When we want to have more roses we must plant more trees.George Eliot

We reap what we sow. We must be clear about our intentions, our desires and our goals. We ought to know our life goals, even our Life Purpose.

How is it possible to get what we truly want when we don’t know what we want?

How would do you come to know what you deeply desire?

Are you a rat?

The problem with winning the rat race is you’re still a rat.Lily Tomlin

We are all like rats aren’t we? We go milling about, with our nose to the ground (and grind), just like rats, looking for that elusive thing or person that will truly satisfy our deepest desires.

We satisfy some desires, are never deeply satiated, and move on to the next thing! We repeat this process while enjoying some bliss, enduring pain and experiencing loads of worry and anxiety.

  • To what end?
  • What’s our goal?
  • Till when?
  • What’s next?

What would happen if the rats stopped, looked around, even looked above? What’s the way out? Lot’s of questions to ponder and ruminate on!

How you think matters…

There is nothing either good or bad, but thinking makes it so.William Shakespeare

A big root of all unhappiness and dissatisfaction with life is our judgmental way of looking at ourselves, others and the world around us. Which is why it pays to watch our thoughts as much as possible.

Most times we lose ourselves in our thoughts. We become our thoughts. An off-shoot of this situation is that we feel irritated when others intrude while we’re lost in our own chain of thoughts.

Become aware of the fact that you are having the thoughts, you are not your thoughts. The latter is what we experience mostly.

As soon as you separate your conscious, witnessing mind from the constant chatter, you are able to tune into a timeless wisdom and peace. This experience expands in proportion to the time you spend in such moments, called Now.
