Your sacred duty…

Work is not always required. There is such a thing as sacred idleness, the cultivation of which is now fearfully neglected.George Macdonald

What keeps you from just being, rather than always doing? What do you fear, is it boredom? Do you fear your past or being alone?

Just being allows for a deep rejuvenation. Such a non-activity replenishes your body, mind and spirit. It’s time when you can experience yourself across these 3 dimensions. You allow for healing to  take place. Healing that leads to a healthy body, a clear mind and a purposeful spirit.

Why would you not jump at this opportunity?

They are not the thing itself…

For they are not the thing itself; they are only the scent of a flower we have not found, the echo of a tune we have not heard, news from a country we have never yet visited.C.S. Lewis

Many of our desires are good. They’re good because they uncover in us the longing that leads to the very source of all such desires. The desire itself might be for a material object, say a digital camera. The question to ask though is, what’s it about a camera that really intrigues us? Is it a desire to know others in a deep way? Is it the need to appreciate beauty around us? Or is it to catalog precious memories that make life worthwhile? What’s even deeper than that?

By asking such questions we can understand better what will satisfy us deep inside. It won’t be the camera (‘they are not the thing itself’) it’ll be what the camera evokes inside us, it’ll also be the experiences that the camera enables in our lives and it’ll be the meaning that we discover.

What joy are you seeking in life? Is it the intermediate form or is it that which is deeper and truer?

How’s your inner life?

In proportion as our inward life fails, we go more constantly and desperately to the post-office.Henry David Thoreau

The modern day equivalent to the Post Office is email, the internet and the cell phone! When we don’t have a satisfying inner life, we run towards outwardly distractions to occupy our minds. We fill our precious time with chores and activities so that we don’t have to confront the emptiness of our own lives.

What’s the inner life? It’s our thoughts and psyche. It’s our self-perception and sense of self-worth. It’s also our chance of touching base with the very reality that created all. An essence of God resides within us, ever waiting for the time when our minds can be a little still. The inner life is our relationship with this essence.

Contact is made slowly and gently. It’s the portal to a peace and contentment that cannot be found without.

Are you a rat?

The problem with winning the rat race is you’re still a rat.Lily Tomlin

We are all like rats aren’t we? We go milling about, with our nose to the ground (and grind), just like rats, looking for that elusive thing or person that will truly satisfy our deepest desires.

We satisfy some desires, are never deeply satiated, and move on to the next thing! We repeat this process while enjoying some bliss, enduring pain and experiencing loads of worry and anxiety.

  • To what end?
  • What’s our goal?
  • Till when?
  • What’s next?

What would happen if the rats stopped, looked around, even looked above? What’s the way out? Lot’s of questions to ponder and ruminate on!

How you think matters…

There is nothing either good or bad, but thinking makes it so.William Shakespeare

A big root of all unhappiness and dissatisfaction with life is our judgmental way of looking at ourselves, others and the world around us. Which is why it pays to watch our thoughts as much as possible.

Most times we lose ourselves in our thoughts. We become our thoughts. An off-shoot of this situation is that we feel irritated when others intrude while we’re lost in our own chain of thoughts.

Become aware of the fact that you are having the thoughts, you are not your thoughts. The latter is what we experience mostly.

As soon as you separate your conscious, witnessing mind from the constant chatter, you are able to tune into a timeless wisdom and peace. This experience expands in proportion to the time you spend in such moments, called Now.

You are important to God

The poet can only write the poems; it takes the reader to complete the meaning.Nikki Giovanni

God is the master poet who writes profusely and with abandon. It is up to us to make meaning out of everything we see and experience. God’s there behind the scenes watching and participating in many more ways than one.

As we experience life and build our meaning and values, God finds that extremely powerful and valuable. He needs us as much as we need him. It takes two to tango and without us and our experience of living, relating and finding deep meaning, his whole creation would be for naught.

You are important to God, very important, always remember that, he can’t do without you, that’s how valuable you are.

If someone irritates you!

If some one irritates you, causes feelings of resentment, you should sympathetically seek to discern his viewpoint, his reasons for such objectionable conduct. If once you understand your neighbor, you will become tolerant, and this tolerance will grow into friendship and ripen into love. The Urantia Papers

Understanding and love among all is the only way the planet will eventually find peace.

How will such a thing happen? Not by God doing it for us or by some other magical means. It must be achieved little by little and one person at a time. It will only happen when you and I change. When such a change becomes apparent to our family and neighbors, they will wonder what it was that changed us!

Then the virus of love and understanding will spread to them and eventually to all we touch, which is the entire planet! This is the prescription for love, peace and happiness that we all seek!
