How Fear Can Be Our Friend…

Our fears can offer us a little wisdom, a bit of insight and a version of that most elusive thing, the truth.  – Karen Thompson Walker

fear

We must not fear fear. Instead we must look at it differently. How might we do that? Take a peek at this 11 minute TED video by the author of the above quote What fear can teach us.

it’s a story

Karen exhorts us to look at our fears as stories. We create these stories, we are the main characters and we imagine the events vividly, just like an artist. Because the end isn’t quite known there’s even an element of mystery in our creations! By examining the storylines we will recognize that we get drawn to the most vivid and easy to imagine events. We ought to step back dispassionately and examine the plots more objectively. And when we do that our fears might reveal the gift that they are…

Here’s Where To Find Peace…

The person should look for peace within and not depend on it in any other place. There are no waves in the depths of the ocean, it is still and unbroken.Buddha

inside

We do need to set goals and achieve them. We do have to experience worldly desires and expand horizons. But never will such accomplishments provide a long term and deep satisfaction. We generate our own happiness when we achieve goals, it has to do with how we make meaning in our lives and process events. Similarly we must depend only on self to find ultimate peace and fulfillment…

stillness

It really is possible to discover and experience this expansive and calming center deep inside. It’s blissful and addictive. Once found it beckons and entices. It’s our real home. Inspiration gurgles out of this eternal wellspring. Let’s not miss out on this personal treasure.

What Should We Do Next?

The fool wonders, the wise man asks.Benjamin Disraeli

ask & observe

We often ask ourselves; what should I do next? That’s a great step forward, we must ask first. What then? Often we keep asking and nothing seems to happen? What’s going on? Nothing seems to happen because we may be looking for a particular answer… We need to be free of any expectations, and once we’re free, we must observe!

Look for signs from the Universe. They come to us in an infinite variety of ways, through people, situations, inanimate objects etc… Observation is key!

now act…

Once we observe something that appears to be a sign lets take the action that’s called for. If we do; more signs will appear, they always do. We’re now actively on our journey of self and Universe discovery!!

How To Stop Being A Fool!

The only fool bigger than the person who knows it all is the person who argues with him.Socrates

fools

We are big fools. We think we know it all. Watch us smirk when others make mistakes. Watch us ‘help’ others when they apparently don’t know what they’re doing. See us feel sorry for them because we see others stumbling. And we even pray for some who need ‘light’ more than we do…

our business

Our business ought to be just us. We aren’t served well when we’re supercilious. The world would be a much better place tomorrow if we can but watch and correct who we are today…

Why Is There Suffering?

God is never wrathful, vengeful, or angry.  – The Urantia Papers

suffering

Suffering is rampant on our planet. Suffering exists because of some of these factors in my opinion:

1) The nature of reality at our level of existence: Given that we’re made of flesh, blood and emotions, it’s inevitable that we will suffer physically and emotionally. Suffering is not optional in this realm.

2) Our choices: Humans make choices that result in happiness and suffering. We must be responsible for making such choices. Humans are behind most suffering on Earth.

3) Benefits of suffering: We grow when we suffer. We become wiser as we live life. God has a plan that takes advantage of the intense living that we experience on our planet.

“Is pleasure–the satisfaction of happinessdesirable? Then must man live in a world where the alternative of pain and the likelihood of suffering are ever-present experiential possibilities.” – Life’s Inevitabilities (The Urantia Papers)

God

God is not human. He does not get angry. He does not visit punishment on his children. He is love. Just like we see far more than our child who cries so soulfully when hurt, so does God when he sees us suffering. There’s much more to life and to God’s plan for us than we can ever imagine while still on this planet! Rejoice, we truly have nothing to worry about because we are eternal beings!!

Why We Must Run From ‘Normal’!

Everything depends upon what we take as normal.  – Vernon Howard

normal

The normal is our enemy. It makes us complacent. It leaves us hypnotized. We stay lazy and never deal with that which must be faced. We assume that whatever’s going on is ok. We don’t question all that we do habitually.

stop and look!

It’s time we stopped and looked. Just like we ask kids to do so when crossing a street. Let’s stop to become more aware of that which we consider normal or just a habit. This pause will serve us well.

How To End The Masquerade!

A person begins earnest work on himself when first sensing he is not who he imagines he is. The end of the masquerade is the start of peace.Vernon Howard

the big game

We all play a game. We project a self that’s not real. We employ various accouterments to support this masquerade. We might speak for effect or do certain things to get noticed. We’re even adept at fooling our own selves. It becomes a very intricate and long running game. It’s almost impossible to see what we’re doing.

observe self

We become privy to this elaborate masquerade when we decide to observe self. Slowly the stories we tell self become more clear. We recognize why we do things to impress others, we realize what lies we tell self to feel better, we understand how we label others so that we can be justified. It all starts to fall apart. And it must if we are to be at peace.
