Are You Religious?

The religious man is he who does not belong to any religion, to any nation, to any race, who is inwardly completely alone, in a state of not-knowing, and for him the blessing of the sacred comes into being.Krishnamurti

one definition

Krishnamurti defines the religious person here. In his view, it seems to me, a person ought to be his own, not swayed by any factor, condition or knowledge. And in that pure state of silence and being, then, is experienced the ‘sacredness’ which is self-evident and may be termed as a ‘religious experience’.

What’s our definition of being religious? What are the important qualities one seeks to attain as a religious person? Why is religion important? What is true religion?

What’s Real In Our Lives?

Have we done anything lately that’s worth remembering?Questions

mostly stuff

While all we see around us is real and beautiful, it’s only just stuff. The house is stuff, the car is stuff, the clothes are stuff, the career and the business is also stuff. Time spent figuring our the next purchase or corporate maneuver is likely of no eternal import.

relationship memories

Put people together and sparks begin to fly! And that’s good and bad sparks. That’s the real stuff. The meanings and values that emerge from relationships and engagements is what we’re really here to create. We’re here to create memories. Which is why every interaction with every human being can be a holy experience. What if all life on our planet was lived with that perspective!?

Daily Affirmation: Today I AM focused on people not stuff!

How To Make Contact With Reality

Only when the mind is wholly silent, completely inactive, not projecting, when it is not seeking and is utterly still – only then that which is eternal and timeless comes into being. Krishnamurti

the thought machine

The mind wants to think, often repeatedly, about the same things. Even when we think we’ve had an original idea, when we trace it back, we realize it was a conditioned response based on what we already know or what we’ve already experienced. Here’s an example: Someone says ‘Look at that beautiful flower’. What do we think? We start thinking about the flower. We compare it to other flowers we’ve seen in the past or we judge its beauty. We don’t actually look at the flower and experience its profound beauty. We manufacture thoughts about the flower and about related topics, never really allowing self to just be and witness the miracle that is that flower…

finding stillness

Who manufactures thought? We do! Why is that often a problem? Because by incessantly creating thoughts we pre-occupy our minds and rarely allow clarity to emerge. It’s like constant ripples on a beautiful lake that don’t allow the lake-bed ever to be seen, or the perfect blue sky ever to be reflected! The trick (with practice) is to just be, see things, emotions, people and events for what they are. When we create thoughts about the experience we miss the real thing. It’s like reading about the aroma of a freshly-baked cake and not actually experiencing it first-hand!

How To Be Anger Free!

Anger always comes from frustrated expectations.Elliott Larson

expectations

If there was one thing we could fix that would guarantee our happiness it would have to be our expectations from life, of others and self. We suffer in direct proportion to our expectation from any event. How many movies have we enjoyed when we didn’t expect much from them? How many restaurant experiences have been so-so because we expected more? What about spouses and kids? Are we suffering daily because of what we expect from them?

easier said

It’s all easier said than done of course. So how can we get going on this path? By watching our thoughts, our beliefs and therefore our expectations constantly. If we’re sick and expect the whole extended family to drop everything and tend to us then we’re guaranteeing our disappointment. Instead expect little. One might say that if we expect little from Life we’ll get less from it. That might be true. We might expect a lot from life and not tie our happiness to the outcome in that case. Seek God’s will instead. At the end of the day all we can do is give life our best shot…

How Can Silence Help?

Language can only deal meaningfully with a special, restricted segment of reality. The rest, and it is presumably the much larger part, is silence.George Steiner

when words fail

Often we find ourselves in situations where words fail. This might be when the other person is not listening or when we can’t add much value with words. Remember situations when another person has suffered a tragedy and we don’t quite know what to say? Or when we say things we don’t quite mean?

silence…

When all else fails, silence speaks volumes. A silent mind is energized and motivated. Silence is often the best policy when others are not listening. It also works wonders when we don’t know how to console another. And certainly it does the trick when we’re just filling space with meaningless chatter.

What Is Christ-like Behavior?

Thoughtfulness is the beginning of great sanctity. If you learn this art of being thoughtful, you will become more and more Christlike, for His heart was meek and always thought of others. Mother Teresa

The Father and I will both work with you, and you shall experience the divine fullness of joy if you will only obey my command to love one another, even as I have loved you.Jesus

Why A New Beginning Is Needed!

For last year’s words belong to last year’s language and next year’s words await another voice.Little Gidding by TS Eliot

celebrate!

See you back on January 2nd, 2012!

2012 is kicking off real soon! Let’s celebrate our 2011 achievements and be extremely thankful for what is. It’s time to reflect. Here are some possibilities!

  • Why is life worth living?
  • What’s unique about me?
  • Whose life can I impact positively?
  • What’s my next step?
  • What can I celebrate about life today?

a new beginning

Let’s become possibilitarians, because life is all about possibilities that we create and co-create with others. God is a partner too, let’s not forget that. Let’s intend to start afresh after some soul-searching and make 2012 our best year ever!
