The Zen Of Enlightenment

Zen opens a man’s eyes to the greatest mystery as it is daily and hourly performed; it enlarges the heart to embrace eternity of time and infinity of space in its every palpitation; it makes us live in the world as if walking in the garden of Eden. D.T. Suzuki

zen –> awareness

The word Zen (Japanese) comes from the Chinese Chán which is derived from the Indian word dhyāna. Constant meditation, or paying full attention to all that we do and to all that we are, is the essence of Zen practice. Mind-fullness leads to greater awareness of self and our surroundings.

awareness –> enlightenment

Increasing awareness in turn leads to true understanding. When we understand things to be as they are, we start to see, we start living in wisdom. In such a state we’re joyous, enjoy a keen intellect, love life, get along with most folks and cannot be disappointed or saddened for too long.

Daily Affirmation: Today I AM joyous and wise.

Don’t Just Sit There!!

Don’t just do something, sit there.Bumper Sticker

do something

That we must be doing something, constantly, is firmly ingrained in our collective consciousness. And not just that, we’re to feel guilty if we don’t do what’s expected of us or what we expect of self. And because of this epidemic we suffer. Thanks to a friend who alerted me to this quote!

be~zen~do

As previously introduced be~zen~do aptly describes the antidote to this pervasive societal illness. Let’s learn to just be. Let’s inhabit the current moment firmly and completely. Let’s breathe deeply and not for a moment think what needs to be done or what we ought to be worrying about. When we do that often, peace results. Our health blossoms and we’re made ready to receive divine inspiration. So it’s certainly worth a try!

Daily Affirmation: Today I AM OK with just being.

The Essence Of Being Present!

So much of modern life is a feverish anticipation of future activity and excitement. We have to learn to step back from this into the freedom and possibility of the present.Fr. Bede Griffiths

ok to anticipate

We anticipate and we dream; we are ever waiting for something to happen. It’s actually a great tendency because the place from where these anticipated moments arise is the same one from where hope and creativity emerge.

fully present

So it’s quite ok to dream and to anticipate as long as we do it with a whole heart, immersed in the experience, fully enjoying the moment as it unfolds. And that’s the trick to stay in the moment even when dreaming of the future!

Daily Affirmation: Today I AM fully here and there.

Why We Must Stop, Drop & Roll!

Learn to pause… or nothing worthwhile will catch up to you. Doug King

fire!

We are people on the go! We wake up in a hurry, go to school/work in a hurry. We do this while breathing hard and fast, thinking quick thoughts and never stopping to smell the rose. Let’s Stop, Drop & Roll!

stop, drop and roll…

When there’s a fire everyone’s advised to Stop, Drop & Roll! We can do the same in daily life, because right now our rushing through the day has reached emergency proportions.

  1. Let’s stop. Center in the moment.
  2. Drop. Let’s sit down somewhere if possible.
  3. Roll. Enjoy the moment completely, roll in the hay, smell the roses!

When we do that we can more easily connect to Universal Currents, we can tap into our Center and be poised to live our Life Purpose!

Daily Affirmation: Today I pause and breathe in deeply.

The Gift

Realize deeply that the present moment is all you ever have.Eckhart Tolle

it’s now

As you read this you do so in what is the current moment. Let’s pay attention to the breath, to where we’re sitting, to what else is on our mind, to our surroundings, to our hopes, our desires and most of all to the observer that observes all this. When we identify directly with this observer we enter the present moment more fully. We can now experience life as it is, in all of its beauty and glory.

the future has arrived

Chances are that the moment we live right now is one we had feverishly anticipated a while ago. Even if that’s not the case we can find amazing positives about our life and situation today. Let’s whip out our journal or utter a prayer of deep thanksgiving for what we are and what we have. This moment is a miracle if we only see it as such. Let’s embrace this gift!

Daily Affirmation: Today I breathe in the Now moment.

Need To Understand

You don’t need strength to let go of something. What you really need is understanding.Guy Finley

using sheer will

How many times have we tried, through the force of will power, to change a habit or to effect change? How many times have such attempts worked? I will wager that the success rate is not high, witness many of our failed New Year resolutions!

understanding comes first

Understanding why we act the way we do is key. Force often doesn’t work and even when it does there’s an equal and opposite reaction that might not be palatable. We must understand why we react negatively when someone says something that’s not agreeable. What exactly is it that ticks us off? Do we fear rejection? What is it that wants us to be right, every time? Examining that, understanding it, is key. The doorway to that understanding is being present to what is.

Daily Affirmation: Today I AM present to what is.
