Why The Soul Must Come First!

Do not take thought for your persons or your properties, but first and chiefly to care about the greatest improvement of the soul.  – Socrates

soul

The soul (or spirit) comes first. The soul has a body, the body doesn’t have a soul. We’re so accustomed to thinking that we have a soul. Apparently it’s the other way around! That turns a few things around doesn’t it?

our job

Our job is to figure out our relationship to this soul that resides within us. The soul that has us! We must devote a significant part of our life to that end. We’re certainly not doing that right now. And it’s evidenced by the current state of world-wide affairs. Let’s attempt to become more soul sensitive…

How Fear Can Be Our Friend…

Our fears can offer us a little wisdom, a bit of insight and a version of that most elusive thing, the truth.  – Karen Thompson Walker

fear

We must not fear fear. Instead we must look at it differently. How might we do that? Take a peek at this 11 minute TED video by the author of the above quote What fear can teach us.

it’s a story

Karen exhorts us to look at our fears as stories. We create these stories, we are the main characters and we imagine the events vividly, just like an artist. Because the end isn’t quite known there’s even an element of mystery in our creations! By examining the storylines we will recognize that we get drawn to the most vivid and easy to imagine events. We ought to step back dispassionately and examine the plots more objectively. And when we do that our fears might reveal the gift that they are…

How To Conquer Fear!

To conquer fear is the beginning of wisdom.  – Bertrand Russell

fear

Fear real or imagined, cripples us. We can’t think clearly when under the influence of fear. If we can’t think clearly then how can wisdom flourish in our lives? How can we conquer fear?

conquer fear

Here are steps that work:

  1. First we must become aware of when we feel fear. We’re fearful of a lot of stuff. Let’s figure out, through mindfulness, what we fear and when, through-out the day.
  2. Next let’s understand the futility of it! Let’s fully grasp and internalize what a waste of energy it is. Most of what we fear never materializes and what does materialize can’t be attended to if we’re disabled by fear.
  3. Once we become aware of any fear arising in our heart or stomach (yes that’s where it generally shows its ugly face!) let’s dissociate from that feeling. In other words recognize that our witnessing of that emotion is separate from it. This is a huge step. We are not our thoughts, we have our thoughts.
  4. Once we learn to dissociate from the fear we can transcend it by choosing our reactions and thoughts regarding any situation. Let’s not be victims for this greatest fraud of all time, let’s become masters of self!

How To Understand the Inevitable!

There is absolutely no inevitability as long as there is the willingness to think.Chuck Jones

inevitabilities…

Death and taxes are certainties we are told. Once we know that an event is inevitable it’s best to come to terms with it and face it squarely. Our character is truly revealed under such trying circumstances. Our human nature and its creativity can face any situation. Let’s do just that when it comes time!

Why It’s All Small Stuff…

It’s all small stuff.Dr. Wayne Dyer

don’t sweat…

Richard died suddenly in 2006; he left quite a legacy in the ‘Don’t Sweat’ series of books he wrote! There’s an interesting story about how the name of his book came about! Richard was still trying to gain permission for one of his current books when a foreign publisher published a previous endorsement by Dr. Dyer. After the fact Richard wrote apologetically to Dr. Dyer trying to explain what happened and received the following reply:

“Richard.

There are two rules for living in harmony.

#1) Don’t sweat the small stuff and

#2) It’s all small stuff.

Let the quote stand.

Love, Wayne.”

2nd Basic Technique to ‘Break the Worry Habit Before it Breaks You’ : Don’t fuss about trifles!

This situation was not necessarily a ‘trifle’ for Dr. Dyer, but he treated it as such! What grief do we cause self and others when we fuss about mere trifles?
