The Role Models

Don’t worry that your children never listen to you; worry that they are always watching you.  – Robert Fulghum

us not them

It’s true isn’t it, we’re ever complaining that others don’t listen (we have all the answers)! If they’d only listen and pay attention, their life would be so much better!!

our life

What about our life? Why are we so full of ourselves that we seldom truly notice where we need to change? Heck if we changed our perspective no one else might ever need to change again!! Children and adults are watching us, we make a profound impact on others the way we show up daily.

Daily Affirmation: Today I AM the best I can be.

Peace In Action

3.17 But the man who has found the joy of the Spirit and in the Spirit has satisfaction, who in the Spirit has found his peace, that man is beyond the law of action. The Bhagavad Gita (Chapter 3)

in spirit

The Gita instructs us that our salvation is found within us. It’s the abode of the eternal. When we seek it and begin to discover the fountain of joy and of peace, our whole life and perspective changes…

for god

The law of action according to The Gita is in effect when we act hoping for a certain outcome, we are then tied to that action and its result. That keeps us from gaining even-mindedness. When an action is made pure by devoting it to God, one is not bound by the effects of such action…

Daily Affirmation: Today I ACT in tandem with the Spirit inside me.

In Your Hands

Unhappiness is the realization that you don’t know how to save yourself. Happiness is the realization that you do know how to save yourself.  – Vernon Howard

loss of control

This is an amazing quote, why? Because it underscores exactly why we feel unhappy. We feel depressed when we think, at some level, often at a deep subconscious level, that things are hopeless for us. Next time you feel sad, check into yourself and try to trace your thoughts back to how it started…

up to us

Turns out that when we feel in control and know that all is well, we feel happy. Vernon was a true mystic, I’ve loved reading his books (I first read the book below about 30 years ago) and highly recommend them. Our happiness is directly linked to our ability to master our thoughts and to discern truth. We must know what needs to be fixed, that will then lead to ways to address that apparent problem.

Daily Affirmation: Today I AM my own master.

What Is Prayer?

Prayer is not a technique of escape from conflict but rather a stimulus to growth in the very face of conflict.  – The Urantia Papers

what is prayer?

Apparently God is listening for our motivation and intent rather than the content of our prayers. For God the experience of being together via prayer is an end in itself. It’s much like a human child and its parent. The parent in this case already knows the child’s deepest desires and simply wants to be with the child during the conversation (or monologue!)…

a growth technique

Prayer has many benefits, here’s a couple that I understand:

  • A way to have a one-on-one conversation with the Creator.
  • A way to know ourselves. When we talk to or pray to God, we reveal to our self, what’s most important. If we pay attention, prayer becomes a growth technique. We understand our values better.
  • The highest prayer is one for higher values, understanding and growth.

What do you pray for?

Daily Affirmation: Today I AM my prayer.

An Eternal Voyage

…death is only the beginning of an endless career of adventure, an everlasting life of anticipation, an eternal voyage of discovery.  – The Urantia Papers

where next?

Do you think about what’ll happen to you after your body gives up? There’s really 3 possibilities I think:

  1. Nothing happens, we just die.
  2. We live on in ‘heaven’ or ‘hell’.
  3. We’re born repeatedly on earth until we attain a certain state.

The Urantia Papers offer a variation around option #2. There’s no heaven (or hell) to be found immediately after death, life goes on, a life filled with reunions, learning, growth and increasing awareness of reality… more on this here and especially here.

what changes?

So if you were eternally ‘safe’ …

  • How would you live daily?
  • What would you do?
  • How would you be?

Daily Affirmation: Today and tomorrow I AM!

Love To Do …

To discover, there must be no fear of not surviving.  – Krishnamurti

discovery

Krishnamurti talks about how one might discover what one loves to do…

To find out what you love to do demands a great deal of intelligence; because, if you are afraid of not being able to earn a livelihood, or of not fitting into this rotten society, then you will never find out. But, if you are not frightened, if you refuse to be pushed into the groove of tradition by your parents, by your teachers, by the superficial demands of society, then there is a possibility of discovering what it is you really love to do.

being fearless

To make such a journey we must be fearless. Then we can truly discover what we love to do, who we are and what will fulfill us. Why does fear stymie our efforts? How can we erase fear? How can we be free?

Daily Affirmation: Today I AM fearless.

Liberating Action

3.9 The world is in the bonds of action, unless the action is consecration. Let thy actions then be pure, free from the bonds of desire. The Bhagavad Gita (Chapter 3)

action can bind

We undertake all action to satisfy ourselves at some level. The desire to achieve, to gain, to own and towards pleasure is selfish. Even when we help or serve others it satisfies an inner need. Any such action, according to The Gita is binding, it’s done for gain, it keeps the cycle that starts with desire leading into action, going endlessly.

pure action

Pure action is when we do things that must be done, need to be done, is good for most, and are not attached to its outcome. It’s action where the outcome is submitted and left to God instead… We act in good faith and we move on, unperturbed by the result.

Daily Affirmation: Today I devote all action to God.
