Towards Selflessness

Thoughtfulness is the beginning of great sanctity. If you learn this art of being thoughtful, you will become more and more Christlike, for His heart was meek and always thought of others.Mother Teresa

lost in self

We’re mostly lost in our thoughts, lost in our own world and constantly worrying about us. Even when we think of another’s well being or safety it’s often in relationship with our own needs. We’re essentially selfish…

christlike

Born animal-like it’s understandable that we’re selfish. However true reality, God’s essence resides inside us, ever leading us upwards and onwards. That compelling attraction wants us to think of others first, be thoughtful, be Christlike. which where the oft used phrase WWJD comes from. What would Jesus do? What would goodness do? What would love do, in this or any situation?

Daily Affirmation: Today I AM thoughtful of others.

Being It, Living It…

Be kind and merciful. Let no one ever come to you without coming away better and happier. Be the living expression of God’s kindness.Mother Teresa

being it

What will happen, if we decide to ‘be’ a certain way, first? In other words become kind and merciful internally, in our demeanor and exude such emotions? What will follow?

living it

We’re told not to pretend and to be real, but pretending to be kind, loving and nice can translate to reality. With enough practice of course. Give it a shot. This principle applies to anything else we really want to ‘be’, effort is still required…

Daily Affirmation: Today I AM what I want to be.

Action!

3.8 Action is greater than inaction, perform therefore thy task in life. The Bhagavad Gita (Chapter 3)

action

We must act. Contemplation, meditation and day-dreaming is all good; nothing beats action, says God in the Gita.

thy task

Action to what end? That surely is the million Dollar (trillion?) question! Busy action doesn’t help, targeted action and of the right kind, certainly does. The action we choose, in my opinion, should ideally result in the highest good for everyone involved. ‘Perform thy task’, says God, what is my task for today and for the lifetime? What is my Life Purpose?

Daily Affirmation: Today I AM action itself.

Which Wolf?

Which wolf will win? The one you feed.  – Cherokee Wisdom

the story of the 2 wolves

I came across this story again lately, you’ve probably read it before:

A Cherokee elder was teaching his grandchildren about life. He said to them, “A fight is going on inside me… it is a terrible fight between two wolves. One wolf represents fear, anger, envy, sorrow, regret, greed, arrogance, hatefulness, and lies. The other stands for joy, peace, love, hope, humbleness, kindness, friendship, generosity, faith, and truth.

This same fight is going on inside of you, and inside every other person, too.” The children thought about it for a minute. Then one child asked his grandfather, “Which wolf will win?”

The Cherokee elder replied… The one you feed.

which wolf?

We exercise a choice with each thought. When we’re not thinking, or when tired, vengeful or irritated we tend to feed our darker side. When we choose the way of goodness, faith, humility, love and kindness we support that which upholds the entire universe, the Truth.

Question: What choice do I tend towards?

Daily Affirmation: Today I feed the goodness inside me.

Best Of Times…

It was the best of times, it was the worst of times, it was the age of wisdom, it was the age of foolishness, it was the epoch of belief, it was the epoch of incredulity, it was the season of Light, it was the season of Darkness, it was the spring of hope, it was the winter of despair, we had everything before us, we had nothing before us, we were all going direct to heaven, we were all going direct the other way …

Charles Dickens

the present

It’s in the eye of the beholder and how we’re experiencing it. It is the best of times for many of us, especially those who have loving families, want for nothing and are happy. It’s also the worst of times for many of our brethren, the countless who are poor, ill, heart-broken, in despair and without hope. It was essentially the same 200 years ago as it is today.

up to us

There’s reality and then there’s what we can do with it. Our attitudes, perceptions, beliefs, assumptions, intentions and affirmations will decide how we live today and tomorrow. What perspective will we choose?

Daily Affirmation: Today I AM happy.

Feelings…

Never apologize for showing feeling.  When you do so, you apologize for the truth.  Benjamin Disraeli

what we feel

What we feel is what we are. From our feelings we truly know, not just through our intellect, what’s good/bad, right or wrong. In fact feelings are a great guide to what we’re thinking. When thinking positive and happy, we have happy feelings, when worried or fearful our feelings reflect just that. So if we ever want to be cognizant of our thinking, let’s ask  “How am I feeling right now?’

the truth

Let’s acknowledge the fullness of our being by accepting our feelings. Let’s do the same in others. Let’s not disparage a person who appears to ‘feel’ more than ‘think’, who is more ‘emotional’ than logical. All is valuable. Let’s hone in on that which is of value.

Daily Affirmation: Today I value feeling.
