Gita: Rest In The Divine

2.53 When thy mind, that may be wavering in the contradictions of many scriptures, shall rest unshaken in divine contemplation, then the goal of Yoga is thine.

2.54 How is the man of tranquil wisdom, who abides in divine contemplation? What are his words? What is his silence? What is his work? The Bhagavad Gita (Chapter 2)

divine contemplation

Krishna, God, has something very important to say to religionists in this verse. He understands that all scriptures are imperfect and such  imperfection confuses all thinking believers. Here he suggests that we not rely solely on written guidance. That we become our own gurus.

how?

Hearing this Arjuna wants to know what it takes to reach such a contemplative state. Stay tuned for the answer. This series continues each Monday.

Expectations and Assumptions

High achievement always takes place in the framework of high expectation.  – Charles F. Kettering

expectation (assumptions)

Yesterday morning I put some vitamin pills in my pocket. Later whenever I would put my hand in my pocket I would feel 2 pills. Then it suddenly struck me that I had put 3 pills in my pocket; how come I could only account for 2 of them? Sure enough there were 3 in my pocket, why did I think I had only two? Upon tracing back that thought pattern I realized that all along I had a mental image (an expectation) in my head that I had brought only 2 pills with me. Because of that assumption I could sense only 2 pills when there were actually 3! Often we can only grasp what we expect to grasp.

expectation = reality

That episode, along with innumerable others convinced me that expectations and assumptions, primarily, design our future. And they also limit what we allow ourselves to ‘see’ and experience.

Ever noticed why kids from wealthy backgrounds mostly turn out wealthy? Kids from happy households are happy adults? A lot of this has to do with the kind of expectations one is surrounded by, not just other nurturing.

Going about our day, what do we truly expect from a health, wealth and well-being perspective? Examining (and designing) such thoughts allows us to fine tune how we constantly create our reality. Be mindful.

Daily Affirmation: Today I design what I expect from life.

Real Wealth

Ordinary riches can be stolen, real riches cannot. In your soul are infinitely precious things that cannot be taken from you.  – Oscar Wilde

transient stuff

Stuff doesn’t last. Which means its value is worth questioning. Which also begs the question: What does last?

real value

Does our awareness, our identity, our personality, last? That’s left to what we believe, one might say. It’s my experience that with belief, faith, comes the slow realization that we’re part of something infinitely larger, a loving presence. This presence deepens with the practice of Stillness. Such an experience constitutes personal proof that we last, forever. If we last then so do others. Relationships then are of paramount and lasting value.

Daily Affirmation: Today I value people.

Visualize!

Visualization, that seeing of that which is not yet, is essential for the attainment of all the good that man may aspire to.Tehilla Lichtenstein

visualize what?

Visualize that which you want to realize in your life. Not that which you’d rather not see. Caught in our fears and insecurities we often dwell more on that which shouldn’t be, rather than that which ought to be. Visualize, preferably, the highest good for the most people concerned.

how?

Feel the end result, see it as clearly as you can, smell it, touch it, experience it fully, live it. Employ all your senses and imagination. Repeat a couple times a day, no more, then let go…

An Example: Visualize your house bustling with family, enjoying the laughter, the fun and games, see light, smell the aromas, experience the happiness, notice that health and prosperity abound…

Daily Affirmation: Today I visualize happiness.

Gita: Evenness Of Mind

2.47 Set thy heart upon thy work, but never on its reward…

2.48 …Yoga is evenness of mind – a peace that is ever the same. The Bhagavad Gita (Chapter 2)

thy work

God instructs us to understand what work is ideal and to devote all effort to it. We’re reminded not to worry or focus on the end result. Control of the mind and protection from its inconsistencies is the goal.

evenness of mind

In most chapters The Gita reminds mankind to cultivate a balanced and even state of mind. One which allows us to stay connected to the divine inside us and one that allows us to stay unflustered.

The Real Secret

Go out of your way to make others happy. You cannot please everybody, but to those souls who cross your path, give kindness and love.Yogananda

the secret sauce

The real secret to life is to focus not on ourselves but others. We feel happy when we make others happy, and that raises our own vibrations. Higher, more positive vibrations translates into all-around goodness for us!

a balancing act

Life is a series of balancing acts. On one hand we must love ourselves and pay attention to what works for us. On the other hand we can’t find true happiness without being selfless and of service to others around us.
