How To Make Contact With Reality

Only when the mind is wholly silent, completely inactive, not projecting, when it is not seeking and is utterly still – only then that which is eternal and timeless comes into being. Krishnamurti

the thought machine

The mind wants to think, often repeatedly, about the same things. Even when we think we’ve had an original idea, when we trace it back, we realize it was a conditioned response based on what we already know or what we’ve already experienced. Here’s an example: Someone says ‘Look at that beautiful flower’. What do we think? We start thinking about the flower. We compare it to other flowers we’ve seen in the past or we judge its beauty. We don’t actually look at the flower and experience its profound beauty. We manufacture thoughts about the flower and about related topics, never really allowing self to just be and witness the miracle that is that flower…

finding stillness

Who manufactures thought? We do! Why is that often a problem? Because by incessantly creating thoughts we pre-occupy our minds and rarely allow clarity to emerge. It’s like constant ripples on a beautiful lake that don’t allow the lake-bed ever to be seen, or the perfect blue sky ever to be reflected! The trick (with practice) is to just be, see things, emotions, people and events for what they are. When we create thoughts about the experience we miss the real thing. It’s like reading about the aroma of a freshly-baked cake and not actually experiencing it first-hand!

The 3rd Fundamental Question Of Life

Why am I where I am?Neale Donald Walsch

questions!

Neale calls them the 3 persistent questions and the 4 fundamental questions of life! We started with persistent question #1 here: What Is It That? Fundamental question #3 is presented above.

why am I here?

Next we ought to explore why we’re ‘here’! Why are we:

  • Where we live?
  • In the relationship we’re in?
  • In this vocation or job?
  • In this country?
  • On this planet?
  • Here??

Questions, the right questions lead us to the next step. When we ask questions God answers! Try it!

Serious?

You will learn that you increase your burdens and decrease the likelihood of success by taking yourself too seriously. The Truth Book

how?

How do we show up daily? Do we think we’re important? What expression do we wear on our faces? How is our walk? Do we talk as though we already know? What attitude do we exude?

childlike

How come candles need wax?” I’m sitting right next to my son who’s doing his homework and that’s what he just asked me Smile! Kids are curious, they’re gung-ho, they’re mostly happy-go-lucky, they hardly take themselves seriously, they’re the only guide we need in life! Let’s be childlike and pursue everything with abandon!

Where Are We Headed?

A good traveler has no fixed plans, and is not intent on arriving.Lao-Tse

travelers

We are all travelers trudging along the highway of Life! Where are we headed? What’s the journey like? What are our regrets? What’s missing? What are our hopes? Are we arriving? Or are we on our way? What do we expect? What’s our demeanor? Are we happy? Did we discover joy? What’s our ‘big’ goal?

freedom

There’s genuine freedom when we’re not weighed down by expectations that we set for our selves or those set by society and norm upon us. Imagine if we had no real agenda. Or that we didn’t care to make too much money or buy all the ‘things’. Imagine if we were true adventurers only bent upon learning and experiencing life as it happened, just flowing with the river of time …

What Can We Let Go?

Are you holding onto something that you need to let go of?Questions

baggage

What baggage do we carry around that would best be dropped off? Emotional baggage like the following?

  • Why life hasn’t been fair
  • Why certain people failed us
  • How some folks hurt us
  • Why I’m not good enough

There can be many a psychological baggage that we lug around, let’s discover some and let go!

journal & forgive

If we’re not sure what we’re carrying around then let’s listen to our ‘recorded message’. This is the message we playback to self and others when we’re complaining about life. It’s a message that’ll surface if we either pay attention or journal our thoughts. The surest way to free self and move forward with gusto is to recognize this recording. Pay full attention to it, forgive the other person or self as needed and move on. Doing this daily for a while might be necessary before this emotional charge loses its hold on us!

What’s Missing?

The problem is you were meant for growth and you’re not growing.Vernon Howard

unhappiness

Many of us, at least some of the time, feel that something’s missing. We don’t feel we’re in control of our own destiny and happiness. Something is amiss, what is it? What are we lacking?

an answer

Change is ever present. And growth is the very hallmark of life and the universe. That’s the very reason we exist, for growth. If we don’t grow mentally and spiritually we stagnate and something deep inside us, our soul, feels the discontent. That discontent is what we sense. The way around it is to actively seek growth and not get used to living in our comfort zone. Meaningful growth then is the key to banishing this discontent!

Daily Affirmation: Today I AM a growth seeker!
