Selfless Action

3.25 Even as the unwise work selfishly in the bondage of selfish works, let the wise man work unselfishly for the good of all the world.

3.30 Offer to me all thy works and rest thy mind on the Supreme. Be free from vain hopes and selfish thoughts, and with inner peace fight thou thy fight..The Bhagavad Gita (Chapter 3)

selfless work

The highest work is that which is done for the greater benefit of others and is done without thought of selfish gain. That is one clear message from this religious tome of ancient India.

inner peace

Inner peace is the foundation necessary for real growth in life. On such soil can be born intentions and resolutions that will lead to divinely inspired actions and results. Such actions will not be binding and will affect the larger good.

Daily Affirmation: Today I AM divinely guided.

Our Natural Essence

Your natural essence is right every time, but will speak only in the absence of fixed beliefs. Vernon Howard

our essence

Our core is inhabited by a creative and eternal presence. We can gain access to this central part of us through a variety of means. It’s ever present and seeking to integrate itself into our conscious living moments.

an open mind

One way to access and collaborate with this essential part of us is to live in the eternal now moment. When we do that with an open mind, few pre-conceived notions and an inner humility, we draw ever closer to this divine presence.

Daily Affirmation: Today I AM open and present.

What Is Prayer?

Prayer is not a technique of escape from conflict but rather a stimulus to growth in the very face of conflict.  – The Urantia Papers

what is prayer?

Apparently God is listening for our motivation and intent rather than the content of our prayers. For God the experience of being together via prayer is an end in itself. It’s much like a human child and its parent. The parent in this case already knows the child’s deepest desires and simply wants to be with the child during the conversation (or monologue!)…

a growth technique

Prayer has many benefits, here’s a couple that I understand:

  • A way to have a one-on-one conversation with the Creator.
  • A way to know ourselves. When we talk to or pray to God, we reveal to our self, what’s most important. If we pay attention, prayer becomes a growth technique. We understand our values better.
  • The highest prayer is one for higher values, understanding and growth.

What do you pray for?

Daily Affirmation: Today I AM my prayer.

Showing Up!

Wherever you go, go with all your heart.Kung-fu-tse (Confucius)

where are we?

Do we at this moment show up completely? Are all our faculties and attention focused on the current moment, the current project and possibly the person we’re engaging with? Why not?

mind, heart & soul

Showing up means to be fully present in mind, via the heart and at the soul level. When we do that we’re tuned into the full possibilities in that moment as well as each unique moment that continues to unfurl.

Daily Affirmation: Today I show up.

Stillness & Harmony

2.65 …for when the heart has found quietness, wisdom has also found peace.

2.66 There is no wisdom for a man without harmony, and without harmony there is no contemplation. Without contemplation there cannot be peace, and without peace can there be joy? The Bhagavad Gita (Chapter 2)

stillness

In the stillness that resides deep inside us can be discovered a peace, even a wisdom that is profoundly therapeutic. The search for this well of quietness is one goal worth pursuing, according to God in The Gita.

harmony –> peace –> joy

What brings harmony into our life? Once the mind enjoys harmony, deeper thinking becomes possible, the mind is now under our greater control. Once thoughts are more directed, the inherent peace seeks an outlet. Joy emerges from that peace.

Daily Affirmation: Today I discover joy by controlling my mind.

Emotional Hurt

Happy is the man who has broken the chains which hurt the mind and has given up worrying once and for all.  – Ovid

what hurts you?

We carry a lot of emotional baggage. People and circumstances have hurt us. Actually they’ve not hurt us, we’ve allowed hurt to occur. Self-knowledge is key to uncovering such issues.

awareness & acceptance

Two ways out of it are awareness and forgiveness. Awareness of what actually happened and our part in the allowing the hurt. Forgiveness can be understood as acceptance. We accept how a certain person is, they are what they are, we let them be, we accept them for what they are and move on.

Daily Affirmation: Today I understand how I allow myself to hurt.

It’s Me Not Them…

Only when we learn to channel the energy we direct toward winning over others into winning over ourselves can we begin to develop our humanity.Daisaku Ikeda

focus inwards

There’s a time and a season for everything, isn’t there? There’s a time to be outward looking, which is ideal when we’re giving or learning. We shouldn’t be looking elsewhere for approval or recognition. Then there’s time to be inward looking, reflective and thoughtful, finding and executing on opportunities to improve ourselves.

win over self

The biggest life quest is over self. It’s true understanding of our inclinations, motivations and failings. Then it’s a fine balance to improve ourselves without self-excoriation and without putting ourselves on a guilt trip. We must be patient with ourselves just like God is with us, her children.

Daily Affirmation: Today I win over self.
