Why We Must Ask Instead Of Telling…

Are you asking me or telling me?Sheldon Cooper

ask first…

Asking people their opinion about a task, seeking their input and involving them in the decision making are the proven ways to solicit cooperation. Just telling them what to do, even if we have authority over them will never work in the longer run. And this approach applies to all people even children. How can we become more aware when we tell instead of asking?

life principles

25th Dale Carnegie Principle: Ask questions instead of giving direct orders.

Here’s a story from the book:

When Ian Macdonald of Johannesburg, South Africa, the general manager of a small manufacturing plant specializing in precision machine parts, had the opportunity to accept a very large order, he was convinced that he would not meet the promised delivery date. The work already scheduled in the shop and the short completion time needed for this order made it seem impossible for him to accept the order.
Instead of pushing his people to accelerate their work and rush the order through, he called everybody together, explained the situation to them, and told them how much it would mean to the company and to them if they could make it possible to produce the order on time. Then he started asking questions:
"Is there anything we can do to handle this order?"
"Can anyone think of different ways to process it through the shop that will make it possible to take the order?"
"Is there any way to adjust our hours or personnel assignments that would help?"
The employees came up with many ideas and insisted that he take the order. They approached it with a "We can do it" attitude, and the order was accepted, produced and delivered on time.

How Mistakes Strengthen Us!

While one person hesitates because he feels inferior, the other is busy making mistakes and becoming superior.Henry C. Link

afraid

We live in fear. Our aversion to making mistakes is another way fear shows up in our lives. We’re so afraid that we hold back. By holding back too much we stifle our creativity and fail to seize opportunity around us. What cost do we pay when we live too safely?

just do it

Often times the best thing to do is to just do it. Yes we’ll make plenty of mistakes, it’s only human. But we’ll have fewer regrets. And if we make mistakes that affect other people we’ll have to deal with that. Nevertheless, life will be a more lively experience! Why shy away, just do it!!

Why We Must All Be Free!

I wish that every human life might be pure transparent freedom.  – Simone de Beauvoir

happy independence day

July 1st and July 4th mark independence for Canada and the United States, respectively, congratulations!! Independence Days by Month and Country.

We ought to be free. What does that mean?

We should be free of fear. We should be free of our biases and ignorance.  We should free ourselves of our limiting assumptions. We should be free of all negativity. We should free others of our expectations. We should freely forgive everyone including self. We should be free to love. We should be free of others’ opinions of us. We should be free of what society thinks we should be doing or wearing.

We should free ourselves from excessive materialism. We should free some time up to devote to God. We should free some time up to serve others.

Why We Are Ignorant!

Self-rescue comes closer each time we voluntarily come face to face with our own ignorance.  – Vernon Howard

self-awareness

Life is nothing but a journey towards greater self-awareness. If we are to be happy and therefore successful, we must face our shortcomings and blind-spots. What is it that comes in our way?

chutzpah

Our ego get’s in the way. Here’s a great article shared by a friend on Why Smart People Are Stupid! We think we’re so smart that we neglect to notice our own short-comings. The work-around is to become more self-aware and humble. Humility will bestow its timeless gift to us only if we acknowledge and accept its presence!

Why We Are Challenged…

People do not grow when their environment is too comfortable, when they are not challenged.  – Daisaku Ikeda

adversity

We are lazy and we refuse to learn from history. Our only true learning comes from facing life challenges directly. Our planet is just the right place to live a life full of rich challenges. We’re forced out of our stupor and must rise to meet any situation that the Universe designs for us!

the prize

Why were we chosen to live this life? What part do we play in all this? What do we get out of this? Why is it the way it is? All these questions will be answered in due time and to our full satisfaction. Until then it’s our task to live life fully, fearlessly, lovingly and continue to seek answers! Life is interesting!

What’s Most Important Today?

The good effort of each man benefits all men; the error or evil of each man augments the tribulation of all men. As moves the part, so moves the whole.  – The Urantia Papers

as go we

What’s the most important goal for us today or any day? We ought to become more peaceful, loving and selfless.

so goes the…

By doing that we contribute positive vibrations to the fabric of the planetary consciousness. Which is why what we think and what we do is of prime importance, daily. The Global Consciousness Project at Princeton illustrates how we are all connected at the level of consciousness. From the site: “The probability is less than one in a billion that [this] effect is due to chance. The evidence suggests an emerging noosphere, or the unifying field of consciousness described by sages in all cultures.”

Why We Are Blue-Blooded!

There is a great deal of unmapped country within us.  – George Eliot

truth

We know and experience very little truth. We see less than 1% of the visible spectrum. We hear a similar percentage of the audible spectrum. Apparently we see rainbows only because of conical receptors in our eyes. Any animal that doesn’t have such cones can’t see rainbows. So we experience reality based on the specific equipment we carry around!

us

While we’re severely limited on what we can experience we should know that we come from the very source itself. We are children of the ‘most high’. Just like in the story about the pauper who doesn’t know that his father is the king of the land, we too scarcely realize where we come from… What can we do to realize more of our inheritance?
